Camp Bestival & Bestival:

Caravanserai

2014 - present

Caravanserai is a unique festival venue and immersive world at the heart of Camp Bestival. Created by artist Pete Bateman, its vintage caravans and classic fairground aesthetic blends old-world charm with contemporary live music and circus entertainment. Our lighting design captures the eclectic and eccentric energy of Caravanserai.

Caravanserai’s unconventional structure presents an exciting challenge for both creative and technical lighting design. Vans are stacked to form a cabaret stage, a caravan perches atop a structure, a jaunty hearse is repurposed as a DJ booth, and for many years an old waltzer ride has served as the main stage. Many lighting fixtures are reclaimed or antique and meticulously restored to meet modern safety standards while preserving the authenticity of the venue. The main stage features 80 individually controlled, video-mapped lampshades that respond dynamically to the music, adding an extra layer of energy and immersion to show. Performances by circus company Cirque Bijou alongside internationally recognised MC and DJ Chris Tofu and his Continental Drifts collective help keep it a beloved centrepiece of Camp Bestival. Bringing together the whimsy of a vintage fairground with the excitement of live music and circus performances under the stars, it’s a project that continually inspires and challenges us, year after year.
