Shambala: Mother of Pearl

Bailes+Light collaborated with artist and designer Genevieve Stawski on this special installation for the 2019 edition of Shambala festival, bringing along our experience of both lighting a variety of materials and creating rigging systems for outdoor spaces. The bespoke chandelier was created with bamboo and dichroic film, chosen for its iridescence that mimicked Nacra or Mother of Pearl. By day, the installation mesmerised audiences with reflections of sunlight and by night it was brought to life by a ring of lights which created subtle and dynamic shifts in colour.
The installation formed the centrepiece of an amphitheatre, our rigging solution, a circular piece of truss suspended from the trees above, provided a strong practical foundation to support the piece. The overall effect was an ethereal, otherworldly piece of art and the illusion that the chandelier was floating amongst the trees in the woodland, adding to the overall spirit of discovery and magic at Shambala festival.
