Rhea Thierstein: Radiant Light for Swarovski

Artist and creative director Rhea Thierstein was commissioned to design a selection of window displays for Swarovski’s winter collection. Her concept featured seven stars, each with long, thin, illuminated shards forming their points, set against custom starscapes. Rhea tasked us with finding a solution to illuminate these shards evenly, a challenge given their varying dimensions and sizes. We explored multiple lighting methods, ultimately using a combined technique of diffused acrylic and narrow beam spotlights: installing tiny spotlights at the ends of illuminated tubes.
For this solution we engineered custom fixtures with specially selected LEDs mounted on heatsinks. Our fixtures successfully illuminated 168 shards across the seven stars with precision. The final installation met our client’s expectations and delivered a striking visual centrepiece for the displays across Austria.
