SubSTRATUM is a public artwork and living community space located on the newly pedestrianised Camden High Street. Co-created by architects Edgy Collective and LINDA as part of the London Festival of Architecture, SubSTRATUM won the ‘Square’ design competition with their concept to re-introduce nature to Camden using a sustainable design practices.
We were brought onboard to design and fabricate the lighting elements to illuminate a nautical buoy, as specified by the architects. Faced with the challenge of creating a look similar to that of lights on traditional zebra crossings, we embedded a ring of LEDs within the hand-carved ‘lamp holder’ - which also doubled as an insect hotel.
Due to sustainable design considerations, the installation had to be entirely off-grid. We specified a high yield solar panel for each lantern that would provide enough power even in the depths of Winter when days are dark.
The lanterns brighten the new seating area and planters, creating a welcoming atmosphere for passers by to stop, rest, and enjoy the space.
We’re proud to have been able to bring our lighting and renewables knowledge to this project, which responds to calls from the community for more seating and greenery, and forms part of the pedestrianisation trial of Camden High Street.
